Sexual Revolution Not Universal in Post-Soviet Countries

Attitudes towards family and sexual norms vary widely across the former Soviet Union republics. At the country level, economic development and the level of religiosity both help to determine attitudes, while age plays an important role at the individual level. Middle-aged people tend to be more liberal than those who are older or younger, according to a study conducted by Sofia Lopatina, Veronica Kostenko, and  Eduard Ponarin  of the HSE's Laboratory for Comparative Social Research (LCSR) in St. Petersburg.

International Students Share their Impressions on Studying at HSE

There are many different reasons why international students choose to study at HSE — the university’s reputation, an interest in Russian culture and desire to learn Russian, an ambition to study with the acknowledged masters of economics, plans to work on the markets with Russian business, reasonably priced tuition.

The Tourism Industry Needs to Rethink Values

People who work in the tourism industry recognize values that matter to companies, but do not always share them. In fact, in recent years, the tourism business is in a complex condition, and a values-based approach could benefit companies working in this sector, research carried out by Kira Reshetnikova and Marina Predvoditeleva, of the HSE Faculty of Management, indicates.

HSE students took part in Integration Days, a three-day programme of open communication at the HSE Business Incubator. This is a new format for the Business Incubator Open House, which will now be used on a regular basis.

Force Majeure choir awarded Chart Dozen prize

Participants of HSE’s choir Force Majeure and their coach Svetlana Sandrakova have been awarded the national music award Chart Dozen (Chartova Duzhina) in the Concert of the Year category for participating in the Sniper Choir. The choir accompanied a performance by the group Night Snipers and its soloist Diana Arbenina at the 2014 Nashestvie rock festival. The award ceremony took place on February 13 at Crocus City Hall.

A Study to Compare School Heads in Different Regions

The Centre for Developing Leadership in Education at the HSE Institute of Education is starting a project to study school heads in 16 Russian regions to make recommendations for a professional development and training programme. The project will become part of the international comparative research on school heads, the Asia Leadership Project, which HSE signed up to a year ago at a conference in Malaysia.

Winter Lessons at HSE

On 31st January to 2nd February 2015 HSE held its annual International Winter School. The Department of Public Policy and Master Programme in Political Analysis and Public Policy headed by professor Nina Belyaeva took part in the event. The Winter School welcomed participants from Germany, France, China, Japan and other countries.

Understanding Our Own History by Learning about Another’s

Social Historian, Franziska Exeler has focussed much of her research on the Soviet Union and the Second World War but at HSE she is asking students to find out what happened in other countries to try to understand the Soviet experience in a global context. She talked to the HSE English News website about teaching and researching at the HSE International Centre for History and Sociology, about discovering Moscow’s architecture and about her life as an academic in Russia.
