HSE University and other leading Russian universities have signed a memorandum with VK and Skillbox to develop online learning and remote-education technologies in Russia. The signing took place at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum.

The parties agreed to cooperate in the development of an educational platform featuring online courses from participating university lecturers. The platform will promote the development of modern hybrid and distance forms of learning and will help improve the accessibility of academic education. Users from all across Russia and neighbouring countries will be able to access educational materials and receive certificates after completing courses.

Nikita Anisimov, HSE Rector

‘HSE University is one of the first Russian universities to enter the online education market. Today, we can see that demand for this kind of learning is growing rapidly, and we wanted to develop in this field in order to increase the variety and accessibility of higher education. We have agreed on a strategic partnership with VK and Skillbox. Now it is important to work to ensure Russia’s technological sovereignty. This also applies to online learning. Our collaboration with Skillbox is a step towards achieving this goal. The new online platform will allow users to receive a high-quality education. We hope that it will become a platform for broadcasting the unique expertise the scientific community and leading practitioners, and that it will encourage users to develop intellectually and professionally.’

A number of other leading Russian universities also agreed to take part in the project.

Vladimir Kirienko, General Director of VK

‘VK has been involved in the development of online education for many years. Our technologies allow users to learn no matter where they are. The new platform will provide access to high-quality learning materials and educational programmes from leading Russian universities. I am confident that the modern learning format combined with the availability of verified content will be relevant to many users. We are happy to be launching this project with strong partners. We hope that new educational institutions will join the project and we believe that our initiative will encourage improvement in the availability of high-quality education in Russia and the development of modern learning formats.’

The education platform features courses ranging from two weeks to three months in length and offers a wide variety of learning formats for students. Users can take distance-learning courses in law, economics, management, history, sociology, and many other fields.
