Employment history

Leonid E. Grinin is a Russian, political anthropologist, sociologist, philosopher of history, economist, and a scholar of historical trends and future studies. He has PhD and is Senior Research Professor at the Institute for Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow and serves as Deputy Director of the Eurasian Center for Big History & System Forecasting (Russian Academy of Sciences). He is also Research Professor and Director of the Volgograd Center for Social Research. He is Editor-in-Chief of the journal Age of Globalization (in Russian), co-editor of the international journals Social Evolution & History and the Journal of Globalization Studies, as well as co-editor of the international almanacs Evolution, History and Mathematics, and Kondratieff Waves.

Grinin`s academic interests lie in the sphere of global technological trends, social laws, social evolution, driving forces of historical development, cyclical trends and patterns, the theory of historical process, evolution of statehood. Grinin`s academic research in the field of Global Studies and futurology is connected with the analysis of modern problem of globalization and modernization, forecasts of the world political and social-economic development, current global crisis, economic cycles of different duration and their modeling, information-scientific revolution and its influence on global processes, history of globalization, comparison of global processes in nature and society.

Dr. Grinin is the author of more than 360 scholarly publications in Russian and English, including 25 monographs. These monographs include Philosophy, Sociology, and the Theory of History (4th ed. Volgograd: Uchitel, 2007, in Russian); Productive Forces and Historical Process (3rd ed. Мoscow: KomKniga, 2006, in Russian); State and Historical Process (3 vols. 2nd ed. Moscow: KomKniga, 2009–2010, in Russian); Social Macroevolution: World System Transformations (Moscow: LIBROKOM, 2009, in Russian; with Andrey Korotayev); Macroevolution in Biological and Social Systems (Мoscow: LKI/URSS, 2008, in Russian; with Alexander V. Markov and Andrey V. Korotayev); Global Crisis in Retrospective: A Brief History of Upswings and Crises (Moscow: LIBROKOM, 2010, in Russian; with Andrey Korotayev); The Evolution of Statehood: From Early State to Global Society (Saarbrücken: Lambert Academic Publishing, 2011). The book about revolutions in the 21st century has been published!

Springer published the book "Handbook of Revolutions in the 21st Century". The Lab's leading research fellows A.V. Korotaev and L.E. Grinin contributed as co-editors of J. Goldstone, one of the most famous researchers of revolutionary processes in modern political science.

COVID-19 Pandemic Brought Humanity Closer to the Next Stage of Technological Revolution

The outbreak of the pandemic posed some serious challenges to the world that required the concentration of many people’s efforts and the use of the latest technologies. This has led to powerful technological breakthroughs, particularly in medicine. HSE University researchers Leonid Grinin, Anton Grinin, and Andrey Korotayev published a paper in which they assessed the impact of COVID-19 on social development. The authors concluded that the pandemic will considerably accelerate humanity’s transition to a new stage of development, but can also cause significant social strain.
