During the conference Low Fertility and Low Mortality: Observable Reality and Visions of the Future, dedicated to the 25^th anniversary of the HSE Institute of Demography, leading international researchers not only presented their reports, but also shared their impressions about their collaborations  with their Russian colleagues.

This autumn, the Third International Moscow Finance Conference will take place at the HSE, on the 8^th and 9^th November, 2013. One of the keynote speakers is Rajnish Mehra, Emeritus Professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara. We spoke to Professor Mehra ahead of his visit and asked him about the conference and his work.

The reform of pedagogical education in Russia should include training teachers in various subjects simultaneously, creating career opportunities, and an algorithm for ‘mobilizing’ the best recent graduates. Anatoly Kasprzhak has studied the experience of teacher training modernization in France, Germany, USA, Great Britain, Finland, Singapore, and Japan.

On November 8-9, 2013 the HSE International Laboratory of Financial Economics (LFE) at the International College of Economics and Finance (ICEF),  is hosting the Third International Moscow Finance Conference. The HSE news service asked Assistant Professor at the ICEF and Head of the LFE, Carsten Sprenger to tell us about what he hopes the conference will achieve.

The international conference ‘Business. Society. Human’ took place at the HSE from October 30-31, 2013. Scholars in economics and the humanities discussed what ‘business with a human face’ would look like.

Contrary to expectations, a growing number of open auction participants doesn’t decrease the price of the contract. On the contrary, the price is lower when the bidding involves only one player – usually, the market leader. Anna Balsevich presented her paper ‘Interregional Comparison of State Procurement Efficiency in Russia’ at the international seminar ‘Sustainable state procurement: development trends and challenges’.

Every day, about one million residents of Moscow’s surrounding regions commute to work in the city. Remote districts are losing prospective labour resources, and the contrast between the quality of life in Moscow’s centre and its outskirts is growing increasingly more noticeable. The HSE online journal Demoscope Weekly analysed the commuting practices of Moscow region residents.
