HSE’s Ranking in SSRN: October 2012

The Social Science Research Network (SSRN) publishes a monthly ranking of socio-economic research centers and universities. As of November 1st, 2012, the Higher School of Economics is in 2nd place in terms of number of papers published over the last 12 months. A year ago the HSE was 85th according to this indicator.

In terms of the number of authors, the HSE has climbed to 3rd place. However, if we talk about the universities above the HSE in this ranking, the number of authors from these institutions publishing their papers on SSRN has remained constant over the last two years, while the HSE demonstrates a considerable monthly growth in this indicator.

Despite the positive trends of the last year, the HSE is falling behind in terms of the total number of downloads and citations. The HSE’s relatively low position in these rankings can partly be explained by the large increase of the number of new papers and authors. And the number of citations of papers by HSE authors as compared with this indicator last year has grown almost eightfold. However, in terms of citations, the HSE is still a long way behind the overall SSRN ranking leader, Harvard’s Economic Department, with the HSE in 135th place, having only 1% of Harvard’s number of citations ( 98796 vs. 908 citations, respectively).

Among Russian HSE staff, the leading positions by the number of downloads and citations are held byMichael Lokshin, Vladimir Gimpelson, Olga Lazareva, Fuad Aleskerov, Anna Lukiyanova, and Alexander Karminsky. The leading authors in terms of the number of new papers are Vladimir Fomichov,Michael Lokshin, Anatoly Nesterov, and Henry Penikas.

Among the working papers from the HSE basic research programme, the most popular, when measured by number of views, is ‘Deconstructing the BRICs: Structural Transformation and Aggregate ProductivityGrowth’ by Gaaitzen J. de Vries, Abdul A. Erumban, Marcel P. Timmer, Ilya B. Voskoboynikov and Harry X. Wu. The top three also include ‘Trial by Fire: a Natural Disaster’s Impact on Attitudes toward the Government in Rural Russia’ byYegor Lazarev, Anton Sobolev, Irina Soboleva, and Boris Sokolov, and ‘Values and Attitudes towards Innovation among Canadian, Chinese and Russian Students’ by Nadezhda Lebedeva and Peter Schmidt. The most popular of the HSE working papers published on SSRN over the last 6 months in terms of downloads and views is ‘Comparison of default probability models: Russian experience’ by Alexander Karminsky , Alexander Kostrov and Taras Murzenkov, which was published in the Financial Economics series.
