HSE Hosts Conference for Junior Japan Experts
The sixth ‘New View’ conference for junior Japan experts has come to an end. The conference was organized by HSE’s School of Asian Studies together with the Japanese culture division of the Margarita Rudomino All-Russia State Library for Foreign Literature (Japan Foundation) and the Association of Japanese Studies.
The nine sessions of the conference, which took place over the course of two days, saw the participation of undergraduate, master’s, and postgraduate students, as well as working Japan experts and researchers from Russia and the CIS.
The broadest session of the conference was on literature, covering a period of time starting with Sei Shōnagon’s 'The Pillow Bookand' extending up to the works of 19th and 20th century Japanese writers. According to Anna Novikova, an instructor in HSE’s Department of Civilizational Development of the East, the junior scholars showed great interest in the session entitled ‘Vectors of Development in Japan’s Foreign Policy’. The main themes of this session included the country’s national security strategy, as well as problems and limitations in Japan’s soft power.
Each year, well-known Japan scholars from Lomonosov Moscow State University and Russia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, as well as representatives from HSE Denis Shcherbakov, Evgeny Steiner, and Maxim Gamaley, traditionally participate in the conference as commentators on the speakers’ presentations.

On the day of the second new moon after the winter solstice, the HSE Cultural Centre welcomed admirers of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese cultures. Japanese Theatre, Dance and Calligraphy at Oriental Crazy Day 2022
Oriental Crazy Day is a traditional festival of the School of Asian Studies, which has been held at HSE University for eight years. This time, Asian Studies students taught guests Chinese calligraphy, Arabic script, Yemeni dancing and origami. They were also introduced to kabuki theatre and traditional Japanese drums.
