At the close of 2019, HSE University once again ranked first among Russian organizations in the RePEc/IDEAS (Research Papers in Economics) world ranking and advanced to a record-breaking 129^th place. The ranking evaluates economic, academic, and research institutions based on their publication activity in economics.

The Shemyakin and Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry  (IBCH RAS) is one of the institutes of the Russian Academy of Science involved in the development of new faculties at the HSE University. It is also where first-year biology students come for hands-on training in research laboratories, and, in some cases, internships. HSE News Service visited the Institute to speak with first-year students at a zoology workshop.

HSE University’s new Master's Programme in International Management is now accepting applications for the 2020/21 academic year. Students of the programme will gain practice-oriented knowledge that will equip them to start a successful career in a multinational company and maximise their potential. The programme will be taught in English.

In 2019, HSE University opened a Faculty of Chemistry, which offers a new bachelor’s programme in Chemistry. The Faculty of Urban and Regional Development, meanwhile, has opened a new bachelor’s programme in Urban Planning. Students of the programmes’ first cohorts and their advisors spoke with HSE News Service about their first semester of study.

At the 2019 Golden HSE Award Ceremony, which coincided with HSE’s 27^th anniversary, Aigul Mavletova, an HSE alumna and Associate Professor of the Faculty of Social Sciences, was awarded the Golden Citation Award. HSE News Service spoke with the recipient of the ‘award within an award’ about why research is more interesting than business.

Bernardo Pincheira is a Research Fellow at the International Research Laboratory for Institutional Analysis of Economic Reforms, Center for Institutional Studies. Having graduated from the University of Nottingham with a PhD in Economics, Dr. Pincheira shared his interest in Economics of Education and peer effects in the classroom.

Through her work, Polina Chernomordik — graduate of the HSE WEaIA Faculty and trainer of the Lightning Process technique — gives new meaning to the concept of success. After all, only the ability to identify and live by your own values — and not doing what everyone else does — enables you to develop in your profession and as a member of society. Ms. Chernomordik also knows how NGOs work in Great Britain, the purpose of a good education, and why we chase after phantoms even though inner peace is more important than career.
