HSE Creative Hub: HSE Art and Design School Presents a New Meeting Point of Art, Research, and Business

The HSE Art and Design School has opened HSE Creative Hub, a city space in a historic two-story building on Panteleevskaya Street in Moscow. It will serve as a venue for HSE University lecturers, researchers, students, and invited experts to hold discussions, presentations, and speeches that will be open to everyone. The hub will also facilitate the development of numerous projects of the HSE Art and Design School and the HSE Institute for Creative Industries Development and allow creators to meet partners from the industry.

On April 12, HSE Creative Hub opened its doors to guests for the first time. The event programme started with the Fashion Futures / Fashion Archive conference, where experts from the HSE Art and Design School delivered lectures and workshops. The day ended with a screening of a documentary film about Vivienne Westwood, a designer who actively worked with archives and historical styles.

Elena Ermakovishna, HSE University doctoral student and producer of cultural events in the Urals, is one of the mentors of the HSE Creative Hub project.

‘I was asked to create a space that would respond to creative industries. I believe that the future belongs to mixed formats, so we want to make our site interdisciplinary, connecting practitioners with researchers. The project will involve doctoral students and researchers from HSE University, as well as practitioners in the field of design. We want these two components—theory and practice—to come together and contribute to the creation of a cool new product.’

Useful meetings in various formats (business conferences, round tables, workshops, TED and artist talks, open lectures, discussions, festivals and video screenings) will be held at HSE Creative Hub throughout the year. Each event will be dedicated to a specific creative industry—design, fashion, architecture, music, museums and galleries, advertising, media and publishing, and more.

The opening of the space is a significant step for HSE University and the HSE Art and Design School, says Maria Stepanova, head of Industrial Design at the HSE Art and Design School.

‘Today’s event is organised together with HSE University’s Doctoral School of Art and Design. I believe that such cooperation most fully reflects the objectives of the HSE Creative Hub platform. This is a meeting place for business, young professionals, experts, researchers, and practitioners. Where can one approach research most deeply if not at a doctoral school? And where can one meet people who actually change the creative industry if not at the HSE Art and Design School?’

Maria Yushenkova, a student of School No.1799 in Moscow, came to the opening of HSE Creative Hub out of an interest in fashion and interior design. ‘For some time, I studied at the Fashion Centre, learned to sew and draw,’ the high school student says. ‘Now I am graduating from high school and I understand that I want to connect my life with the field of design. I plan to enter the Fashion programme at HSE University. This is the best university in the field of design in Moscow.’

HSE Creative Hub provides an opportunity to learn new things, believes Alexandra Grigoryeva, a first-year student of the Antiquity programme at HSE University. ‘I enjoy studying at HSE University. I am pleased with the teachers’ attentive attitude towards students, as well as the cool features that the university offers to students: conferences, various events, tuition discounts, and much more. I am interested in the topics of the lectures delivered here today. I like fashion, and I follow trends and watch shows,’ says Alexandra.

The next event at HSE Creative Hub will take place on April 28th and will be dedicated to Digital Products and Digital Design.
