Linguatest Accepted for Credit Transfer in Bachelor's Degrees and Applications to HSE Master's and Doctoral Programmes
Linguatest is a multi-level test that assesses candidates’ level of proficiency in a foreign language, from elementary to advanced. Now, the results of the test are accepted when transferring elective subjects in English, as well as for internal and independent examinations in bachelor's degrees. The changes also affect admission to HSE master's and doctoral programmes: Linguatest is included in the list of certificates in a foreign language that can be presented when applying for master's and doctoral programmes starting from 2023.
Students can take the test in several formats: digitally (via computer), in paper form at HSE test centres in Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod, and online with synchronous proctoring from anywhere in the world.
About Linguatest
The test assesses four types of language ability:
- Reading (60 minutes)
- Writing (65 minutes)
- Listening (30 minutes)
- Speaking (15 minutes)
Students take all four types in one day with a short break.
The tasks are based on real communicative situations and tasks and progress from simple to complex. The Linguatest website features a section where each candidate can get acquainted with the materials for preparation, as well as sign up for testing. Registered candidates get access to a demo version of the test to help them get acquainted with the digital system, the specifics of each of the tasks, and the presentation format.
How to Take the Test
Candidates should get acquainted with the testing schedule—testing sessions from March to August 2023 are currently available. Then, they must register on the website of the Federal State Budgetary Institution ‘Rosaccredagentstvo’, choose a convenient date and format, and pay for the test.
The Results
Each candidate’s results of are evaluated on a scale from 1 to 100 points and sorted using the following descriptors: Proficient User (86–100 points), Independent User (66–85 points), Confident User (46–65 points), Basic User (26–45 points), and Beginner (11–25 points). Based on the test results, each candidate receives a certificate in Russian and English. The certificate is valid indefinitely.

Linguatest is useful not only to students and applicants of HSE master’s and doctoral programmes, but also to:
- candidates for positions requiring proof of English proficiency
- employers who need to check the knowledge of employees in the field of English-speaking communicative competence
- anyone who wants to determine their level of English proficiency and get a certificate
