Members of the Russian national team at the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI 2025), gold and silver medal winners Petr Losev and Daria Grekova, have joined the Applied Mathematics and Information Science degree programme at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science.

HSE has published the list of students admitted into state-funded places without entrance examinations. This year, the Faculty of Computer Science has admitted 232 winners and runners-up from the final stages of the All-Russian Olympiad of School Students and other accredited competitions in informatics, mathematics, physics, and economics to its undergraduate programmes on state-funding.

The Applied Mathematics and Information Science programme has enrolled 129 students, Software Engineering—83 students, and Economics and Data Science—20 students.

Daria Grekova and Petr Losev, both graduates of Moscow School No. 57, were among those admitted. As members of the Russian team, they took part in the 37th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI 2025), where Petr earned a gold medal and Daria received a silver. Both students are also winners of the All-Russian Olympiad of School Students in Informatics.

Daria Grekova

‘My Olympiad journey began in Year 5, when I joined my school’s informatics club and was encouraged to take part in the selection round for the Moscow Olympiad for School Students. I passed and became a prize-winner. After that, I started actively preparing for competitions. What I like about Olympiads is that they let you tackle interesting problems and compete with others. In informatics competitions, I especially appreciate the ability to see the results immediately and the objectivity of the scoring system, which is not dependent on the examiner’s opinion.

I had heard many positive things about HSE’s Faculty of Computer Science from people I know, which is why I chose it. The Applied Mathematics and Information Science programme appealed to me because of the strong mathematics component, the opportunity to start studying machine learning early and try my hand at research via the ‘AI360’ track. I plan to continue taking part in Olympiads during my studies, and to attempt qualifying for the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC). I look forward to exploring research opportunities and making the most of HSE’s educational offerings.’

Petr Losev

‘In primary school, I liked mathematics. Then, when I transferred to a new school in Year 5, I started informatics, and liked it even more. From Year 7, I attended various training camps, joined clubs, and studied on my own a lot. I enjoy competing with others, solving problems, and, of course, winning—which is exactly what competitions are all about. When applying to university, I chose HSE’s Faculty of Computer Science because I believe it offers the best informatics education in the country. Like most of my friends, I opted for the Applied Mathematics and Information Science programme. In the future, I will probably take part in ICPC.’

Evgeny Sokolov

Evgeny Sokolov, Head of the Big Data and Information Retrieval School at HSE’s Faculty of Computer Science and Academic Supervisor of the Applied Mathematics and Information Science undergraduate programme, notes that Olympiad winners and runners-up make up a large share of the programme’s intake every year. ‘I think this demand shows that we can offer a high-quality education to the country’s top applicants. We are constantly developing the programme, creating new opportunities for students to get the most out of their studies, and regularly expanding our range of electives and optional courses. Our research tracks, including AI360: Artificial Intelligence Engineering, are also developing. These tracks provide students with the chance to begin their research careers early. Naturally, our partnerships with IT companies continue to grow, and we are constantly involving more and more industry professionals in teaching and project supervision. I am confident that our first-year students will have four very interesting and eventful years ahead, and we will be happy to support them every step of the way.’
