Winning hands down

The HSE Nizhniy Novgorod team won the Russian round  of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, held in Moscow in February. So the HSE team will be Russia's main representative during the Jessup 2009 International Rounds.

The Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition started in 1959. It is a competition among students in international legislation. It is held as a simulation of a fictional dispute between the countries before the International Court of Justice, the United Nations judicial body. Today it is the worlds'largest moot court competition. Participants represent 500-600 law schools from more than 90 countries. This year the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition celebrates its 50th Anniversary.

"It must be emphasized that the SU HSE team is the clear winner of the competitions. The HSE team has been honored by the prize for the best memoranda. There are four HSE participants among the top ten individual performances", Maria Isaeva, the national administrator of the Jessup Competition Russian round, wrote in her letter to the HSE Rector.

In February at the MGIMO-University Great Conference Hall as part of  the final of the Russian round, HSE students successfully supported the defendant's position according to the 2009 Competitions program. Mr. Gilbert Guillaume, president of the UN International Court of Justice, 2000-2003, Genevieve Bastid Burdo, International Law professor at the Paris I Sorbonne, and Haplar Gadjiev, judge at the Human Rights European Court, attended the event.

The all-Russian qualifying round of the Jessup competition has been held since 2002. This year a record number of 45 Russian Faculties of law participated in the competition.

"While participating in the competition the HSE Nizhniy Novgorod branch students received the opportunity to work like professional lawyers for several months. They also received a unique opportunity to write and to make judicial presentations in English. Their victory gave them the right to represent Russia at the international round in Washington during the Jessup 50th anniversary", M. Isaeva said.

The national administrator of the Jessup 2009 in Russia M. Isaeva congratulates the HSE Rector Yaroslav Kuzminov with these achievements and addresses the HSE team best wishes for March 22-28 World completion.
